MAPFRE Uruguay Compañía de Seguros S.A. was established in 1995 as the first foreign private insurer to obtain permission to operate in Uruguay after the state monopoly ended and the insurance industry was opened to private businesses.

Since then, MAPFRE Uruguay has grown continuously, adding benefits and services for customers, including coverages tailored to the needs of Uruguayans. MAPFRE operates in all lines of business except for workers' compensation, which is run by the State. MAPFRE is the first and only company in the private market to implement its own network throughout Uruguay.
